Event Details
A Commemoration of the Mountain Bushman Thursday 16 April 2026 at 11am
Join our local museum as we reminisce the stories, poetry and heritage of high-country bushmen. This special presentation explores the lives of the cattlemen and stockmen who shaped the character of the Australian bush. This year we have a special presentation that showcases two new exhibits.
New research into the life of Jack Riley, widely believed to be part of the inspiration of Banjo’s Paterson’s ‘The Man from Snowy River” will be shared alongside bush poetry that reflects the grit, humour, and spirit of life in the mountains.
We will also launch the Banjo Paterson High Country Trail, a spotlight on the unique connection between Banjo Paterson, the Australian bush, and his poetry. The trail links important local sites associated with Paterson’s visits and the landscapes that inspired some of Australia’s most famous bush poetry. Entry to the museum is free for this event.
The Man from Snowy River Museum will be open over the festival from 10am to 4pm, entrance $5 a person, $1 a child and $10 family (2 adults and their children). On display are Jack Riley’s saddle bag, his watch, a reconstruction of Jack’s hut at Tom Groggin. There are many other objects from the pioneering days; rescued buildings, pioneer saddles and farm equipment, historical textiles and everything needed for this area to survive. Tours will be running daily, starting at 11am and 2pm. If you ask at the desk, tours are available outside these times. You hope you enjoy your time at the festival and look forward to being a part of this epic experience.
